Suunto T3 Running Pack (T3 Heart Rate Monitor and Foot POD) Overview

Designed for athletes on foot, bike, or skate, this multisport system from Suunto provides comprehensive heart rate monitoring while tracking speed and distance across a wide variety of outdoor activities including hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, inline skating, and kayaking. Ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and athletes of all types and skill level, this advanced-function combo pack includes the Suunto T3 Wristop Computer and the motion-activated Foot POD.

The Suunto Foot POD wirelessly transmits speed and distance data to your T3 heart rate monitor. It features accurate data collection during both indoor and outdoor workouts by measuring each stride with built-in acceleration sensors and speed limit alarms alert you if you're going above or below your preset limits.

More than a heart rate monitor, the Suunto T3 Wristop Computer helps you train with confidence by providing real-time information on the aerobic benefit of each workout. Are you over or under-training? Sweating hard enough to reach your goals? The Suunto T3 knows and tells with real-time Training Effect.

More powerful than traditional zone training systems, Training Effect keeps you on-target for achieving your goal, whether it's weight loss, cardiovascular health, or shaving minutes off a marathon. By working from your personal fitness profile, the Suunto T3 analyzes your heartbeats and translates the data into a simple, one-to-five Training Effect scale. As a personal training guide, Training Effect is relative to each user. While a novice runner might achieve a TE of 4.0 on a four-mile jog, a professional runner might have to complete an uphill marathon to get the same reading. Both runners will have to exercise hard to achieve a TE of 4.0.

In addition to Training Effect, the Suunto T3 displays heart rate, calories burned, and zone training. It also shows speed and distance with optional Suunto PODs. The onboard logbook has a 15-workout memory. Additional functions include dual time, date, alarm, and a stopwatch with split/lap.

Features:

  • Real-time Training Effect
  • Current heart rate, average heart rate, and maximum heart rate
  • Real-time calories burned
  • Three-tier zone training system with alarms
  • Two adjustable heart rate limits with alarms
  • Dual time, date, and alarm

About Suunto
Suunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering enthusiast, Tuomas Vohlonen, who had long been bothered by a problem: the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and their lack of steady needle operation. Being an engineer with an inventive turn of mind, he discovered and patented the production method for a much steadier needle, better readings, and a new level of accuracy.

By 1950 the company was exporting compasses to over 50 countries around the world, including Canada and the United States. In 1952, Helsinki was hosting the Olympic Games, and the torches carried to light the Olympic flame were Suunto products. The next step was improving the stability and accuracy of marine compasses. The first marine compass, the Suunto K-12, was launched onto the market in 1953. In 1957, Suunto started manufacturing hypsometers, which measure the height of trees.

In the 1960s, the compass range grew further and Suunto introduced its first diving compass--initiated by the divers themselves. A British sports diver attached a Suunto compass to his wrist and found that the device also worked underwater. Thanks to his feedback and initiatives, the new business category was found. Suunto's exports and business grew steadily and Suunto then focused on combining its strength in precision mechanics with new skills in electronics. Accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness have been Suunto's key values from the very beginning of the company history.

Today, Suunto is a leading designer and manufacturer of sports instruments for training, diving, mountaineering, hiking, skiing, sailing, and golf. True to its roots, Suunto is today the world's biggest compass manufacturer. Prized for their design, accuracy and dependability, Suunto sports instruments combine the aesthetics and functionality of watches with sport-specific computers that help athletes at all levels analyze and improve performance. Headquartered in Vantaa, Finland, Suunto employs more than 500 people worldwide and distributes its products to nearly 60 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Helsinki-based Amer Sports Corporation with the sister brands Wilson, Salomon, Atomic, Precor, and Mavic.

Suunto Motion Activated Foot POD

Suunto Motion Activated Foot POD Review

I really like the foot pod. I'm in the Air Force and run quite often to keep myself in shape, and I have always found it hard to gauge my speed... usually I have to use lap times, but by the time I make a lap, I'm either already getting worn out because I ran too fast or I realize I'm going too slow and I have to really push on the next 5 laps to make up for it. With the Suunto T3 + this foot pod, I can easily watch my speed and adjust throughout my run. I have found that the foot pod is a little bit off - about .01 mile per 1/4 mile, but I have easily adapted to that.

I also find it really nice to be able to run anywhere I want and know the exact distance I went. Super nice.

I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who runs.

Suunto Universal Bike Pod Wireless Transmitter

Suunto Universal Bike Pod Wireless Transmitter Review

Pairing the pod is a little tricky. I tried using a magnet from my old speedometer, and it did not work. The problem is that you'll need to activate the pod before you can pair it to the watch (by simply turning the weel), and there is no indication whether that indeed worked. Documentation is a little brief. I choose to mount it on my rear wheel, and I mounted it upside down so the pod was closer to the magnet. I have no clue if these are the best choices, but it works now and since it is connected to the bike with tie-wraps I am not going to change it. Despite this, the setup was actually pretty quick, and it worked without problem for the few rides I did after installing it.

A "Wristop Computer Bike Adaptor" is included, this is a piece of plastic that fits around the handlebars, and you can mount the wristwatch on this piece of plastic. Simple but effective, except that this design was not made for oversized handlebars (31.8 clamp size), that are found on newer and/or higher end bikes. It still works, but it does not look pretty.

The screen of the T3 that I use gets a little crowded, and the numbers are small. You could buy a separate bike computer for less money, and have bigger numbers for easier readout. However, I like this bikepod, because there is very little stuff attached to the bike. Another advantage is that the stats are included on the wristwatch.

Suunto Foot Pod Wireless Transmitter

Suunto Foot Pod Wireless Transmitter Review

Purchased the foot pod as part of the Duathlon set for the T6. It's a really great training tool, but you need to understand what you are getting and not get totally caught up in the "accuracy" factor

PROS - much lighter than it looks - really don't notice it on your shoe. Easy to clip on your laces. It works - the ANT transmission is really reliable. It lets you run anywhere and gives you a pretty accurate record of how far and how fast you ran. It's very accurate out of the box and even more accurate after calibration. It's very durable and has good water resistance (I've used it without problem in rain and snow but don't do water aerobics with it). Uploads all the distance and speed info to the T6 on the fly for later download to a PC.

CONS - it measures differently depending on the speed you run, the type of shoes you wear, the grade you are running, the foot you have it on, and the position it sits on your laces. For best accuracy, you should do a half mile calibration warm up at the speed you intend to run, calibrate it and then start your run. That will give you an amazingly accurate distance count for that run, but accuracy will still drift a little if you change your pace a lot or if you say run a really hilly cross country track. However, don't get hung up on 100% accuracy. This device gets so close it hardly matters, and unlike a GPS, you can use it indoors (track or treadmill), in the forest and on windy tracks. This device is all about being able to run anywhere and get a pretty accurate measure of how far you have gone. The only other "con" I have with the pod is that while the average speed results are very accurate, the on the fly speed indicator it sends to the watch can often vary wildly, making it difficult to get a sense of exactly how fast you are going. As the device works on kinetic force measurement, it may all depend on the position and momentum of your foot when the pod transmits to the watch, but the overall average is always accurate.

One day someone will invent a device that gives 100% accuracy without any calibration needed. When that device comes out I will give it 5 stars. Until then, it only gets 4 stars, but make no mistake - this is the best product of its type out there and is certainly not a gimmick.
